Review- U2 Storms Infinite Energy Arena To Present Experience+Innocence Tour

untitled shoot-0522U2 stormed into Atlanta (along with Tropical Storm Alberto) on Memorial Day to take the stages at Infinite Energy Arena and rouse their fans with the best American protest concert ever!!  Prior to taking the stage, the “barricage” located between the two opposing stages was awash with the message of the tour – protect the American Dream.  Messages such as “Enough“; “Take Over, Unite”; “Make History Herstory“; “Poverty is Sexist” scrolled across the LED screens before Bono opened the show standing alone in the center of the barricage singing Love Is All We Have Left.  The rest of the band joined on the center walk appearing in silhouette to The Blackout.

The message of the tour was repeated throughout the concert via U2 songs that are perhaps even more relevant today than when they were originally written such as Sunday Bloody Sunday while images of the battles in Ireland flashed and the crowd chanted “no more war”;  Staring at the Sun while images of white racists groups and riots in the streets played;  Acrobat with Bono in MacPhisto face sings “When you don’t believe that I exist, that’s when I do my best work” and Get Out of Your Own Way.

Counterbalancing the angst of those songs were the songs of love and hope for the future such as Pride while images of Martin Luther King and the Women’s March played; American Soul with a huge American flag behind the band;  Love Is Bigger Than Anything in Its Way and Women of the World.  Bono ended the concert with There Is a Light, once again singing solo on the round stage urging “Darkness gathers around the light/Hold on, Don’t let the Light go out”

The music was spectacular, the technology of the barricage and LED screens formidable, and the message of a desperate need for change loud and very clear.  Bravo U2 for not only entertaining us but for continuing to be ambassadors of the American dream.
