The “Z” rated, Top vinyl ZZ Top took the stage to Got Me Under Pressure while videos of a pulsing heart played on the stage behind them Friday night at the sold out St. Augustine Amphitheater. ZZ Top has been entertaining us with great rock and blues for 40+ years….the same three members..even the same two guitars..is there another group that can make that claim?
ZZ Top has produced so many incredible hits over those years that it is difficult to pick a favorite from their set. Jesus Just Left Chicago brought the blues to the stage, followed by Gimme All Your Loving, with everyone singing along and earning the first standing ovation of the night. I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide allowed Billy Gibbons to show off his amazing guitar riffs and the Jimi Hendrix tribute Foxy Lady, with Jimi’s photo in the background, was fantastic. Catfish Blues took us back to pure blues and a smokin hot guitar. Sharp Dressed Man and Legs were clearly the crowd favorites.
After a very short break, ZZ Top returned to the stage in their bedazzled jackets and were joined on stage by the magnificent Jeff Beck, who took center stage for an amazing Rough Boys. All three guitarists then took center stage for the heart pounding Sixteen Tons showcasing the phenomenal musical talent that was in front of us. ZZ Top concluded the evening with the ever popular Tush.
It truly was a tremendous treat to see and hear ZZ Top perform again and the addition of Jeff Beck simply put the evening over the top.
