Ignite Interview~ Amaranthe’s Elize Ryd talks about the bands heavier sounding sixth album Manifest

The Swedish six-piece have spent the last decade establishing themselves as a formidable, positive and fervently melodic force for metallic good. From their explosive self-titled debut in 2011 to the more sophisticated, streamlined likes of 2014’s Massive Addictive and its immaculate follow-up Maximalism (2016), AMARANTHE have masterfully blurred the lines between melodic metal, crushing brutality, cinematic sweep and futuristic sparkle. Led by the endlessly ingenious songwriting of guitarist Olof Mörck and powerhouse vocalist Elize Ryd, their rise to prominence has been a joy to behold.Widely acclaimed as a dazzling live act, the Swedes reached a new peak of creativity on 2018’s hugely successful »Helix«: an album that pushed the band’s vision to new heights, breadths and depths, while showcasing the brilliance of Elize and her co-vocalists, Henrik Englund Wilhelmsson and recent recruit Nils Molin.

The Band is: Elize Ryd (vocals) ,Henrik “GG6” Englund Wilhelmsson (vocals), Nils Molin (vocals),Olof Mörck ( guitars & keys), Morten Løwe Sørensen (drums) and Johan Andreassen (bass)

Manifest (Cyan Vinyl)

IMM: Hi Elize,  I am happy to talk to you again after four years for the Maximalism album and seeing you at the Belasco theater at Los Angeles, California with Heidi from Butcher Babies joining you on stage.

Elize:  Thank you and you have a good memory

IMM:  Your songs have a distinct and consistent sound yet for this album the first song “Fearless” hits you hard and the low end is bumped up to make the sound heavier. The songs on this album are fresh? No demos or unreleased recordings?

Elize: Yes, all fresh. Eight songs written after the tour with Sabaton and we went into the studio in March

IMM: This album has 10 songs and for Australia the extra is song “82nd All The Way” (Sabaton cover) and UK and additional song as remix. Was the Sabaton song being recorded and video for this album?

Elize: No, we went to record “82nd All The Way” and “Do Or Die” with Anglea Gossow (Ex-Arch Enemy) that is why Henrick and Nils aren’t in this video. Just us and Olof. Nils and Henrick were at the Sabaton warehouse

IMM: I want to talk about the videos for “Strong” and “Do Or Die” and who requested to sing with Angela and Noora (Battle Beast) for these songs?

Elize:  Okay, the “Do Or Die” song was unnecessary suggestion that Angela I sing together that she had and to work on the concept focusing on environmental issues. With Noora, we were going on tour together and since we did the same thing for Sabaton and Noora is such a great vocalist and a great attitude and a good friend of mine and would be great to go on tour together and on stage together and  would be fun to combine the bands. The song I chose is based on how it is to be woman in this business and when suggested to sing with Noora I decided not sing strong but as a guest and the Boom song is Henricks. We decided not to make the songs like a threesome so to speak

IMM: The album was started to be recorded last year?

Elize: We started to talk on the concept and the Manifest theme on how to manifest  Amaranthe for a new beginning which it felt in some ways so that was September 2019. We wrote 25 songs during February and came back from the tour with new energy like arena environment or atmosphere. We needed more straight forward songs than like they were complicated

IMM: For “Archangel”, Olof wanted to a little Satan on this to album?

Elize:  The idea s more like a metaphor then when it came to record the video it was visually tempting to capture that old Goth feeling which we never done before. So that was a new direction for us and the song is based on The Paradise Lost which is Olof’s favorite books. So is based on Lucifer and how get thrown from heaven and landed on earth for having too much pride for killing his men and for power. All the stories are supposed to inspire humanity.

IMM: The other two songs: “Die And Wake Up” and “Do Or Die”

Elize: “Die And Wake Up” is when you experience things which are too hard to handle or wish they didn’t happen and you want to die and wake up and those things will be gone.  “Do Or Die” is we have to make a change to our environment or we are going to die. This was written before the pandemic.

IMM: I always enjoy talking to you, thanks for your time and listening to the band and seeing you all performing. Hope to see you next year or when the venues are open.

Elize:  Thanks and I hope to see you and all too
