Review by Dominique Wheelock- Continuing their nearly twenty-year tradition with a Boston area St. Patrick’s Day tour, Dropkick Murphy’s hit the stage Friday night at The House of Blues with the bang of an Irish drum. This year they held four back to back shows at The House of Blues that ran from March 15th straight through to March 18th and all shows were sold out. It has long been a tradition for those in Boston to attend at least one of the shows where for one night a year “everyone is Irish.”
The Guinness flowed almost freely from the taps as the crowd set out to celebrate the Irish holiday a day early with their favorite band. Dropkick’s opened their set with “The Boys are Back” which was the perfect selection since it immediately drew the crowd into a wild frenzy of raised hands and loud chants. Truly though, the boys were back! Right in their own hometown where the crowds would love them the most!
A small platform was added to the middle of the photo pit in between the stage and the crowd barrier which allowed the band members to step closer and reach into the crowd of adoring fans. Almost throughout the entire night lead singer, Al Barr would get close and share his microphone with the crowd as they sang along to every song and reached their hands up in hopes of a high-five or handshake.
The band played twenty-two songs which ranged from traditional Irish songs to raucous punk anthems. They even had Irish dancers come out to join them on stage and show off their moves! The entire night was filled with loud crowd chants and surfers making their way through the crowd. Several times things were flying in the air such as beach balls as the smell of Irish Jameson and Guinness filled the air.
Dropkicks came out with an encore and ended the night with one of their most popular hits “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” which is radio friendly and very well known worldwide. This was the place to be Friday night and one could only imagine just how wild their Saturday night show would be on the actual holiday!
