Interview With LA Based Dark Pop artist DXRLING
Someone once asked me how I could be a nude model AND a musician…
“It’s strange to me that people can’t wrap their heads around the fact that you can enjoy being naked and also enjoy creating art “
LA Based Dark Pop artist DXRLING has released the official music video for her effervescent new single, “Summertime.” Directed by Ron Underwood and Randall Mathias, “Summertime” is off of DXRLING’s upcoming, debut EP, which was produced by Sahaj Ticotin (Motley Crue, Starset, Sevendust).
Ignite had the pleasure of asking a few questions to DXRLING on a veriety of things from how they got into music to advice to others that want to get into the industry.
Q.What got you into music and what keeps you going night after night playing?
DXRLING: My dad got me into music. He was an extraordinary musician but unfortunately lost his life to heroin addiction when I was 9. I inherited his guitars and ever since then I’ve had a burning passion to make music. It’s the only thing in this life besides love that truly makes me feel complete.
RANDY: When I was younger my next door neighbors had a band and they would rehearse in their house. I used to sit outside and listen to them play. Then one day they noticed me sitting out side and asked my If i’d like to watch. Oh course i jumped at the chance. That night i made the decision that that was what I wanted to do with my life
Q. So what is new with the band? New album out? New videos?
DXRLING: We just released our newest single and music video “Summertime“. We’re also getting ready to head out on a tour through America and Canada with Kaleido and Stitched Up Heart in six weeks!
Q. If you didn’t become a musician, what would you be doing right now?
DXRLING: Who knows? Music has shaped my entire life. But before I decided to give my dreams my all, I was in college en route to become a psychologist. So if I had stuck that out I’d probably have a lot more money… LOL.
RANDY: I’d probably be an accountant or running some type of business. I’ve always been good with math. Back in school it was the one subject that I really enjoyed doing.
Q. What is the weirdest or funniest question you have ever been asked?
It’s strange to me that people can’t wrap their heads around the fact that you can enjoy being naked and also enjoy creating art~
DXRLING: Someone once asked me how I could be a nude model AND a musician. Like… It’s strange to me that people can’t wrap their heads around the fact that you can enjoy being naked and also enjoy creating art. What a concept. Lol.
RANDY: When are you going to stop this musician lifestyle and come back home? HHAHAHH Good one
Q. If you can have your fans remember you for one thing, what would that be?
DXRLING: I would want my fans to remember that I was deep, I was not going to be put in a box, and that I expressed myself exactly how I wanted to. And that I encouraged them all to be the brightest fucking stars they were born to be.
RANDY: That i believe in equality and wish for world peace.
Q. On a scale of 1 to 2593, how good is your new single compared to your last single?
DXRLING: My answer is 0 because I honest to god cannot compare the two. They are completely different, one is dark and sad and one is a party anthem. They are both cool in their own ways.
Q.Do you think you can get any better as a musician/singer? And if so, how would you achieve that?
DXRLING: No I’m the best. JUST KIDDING. Yes definitely. I’m always taking vocal lessons and trying to improve my songwriting skills. It’s truly all about practice and dedication and perseverance. There’s no secret formula. Haha.
RANDY: I think that no matter how good you are at your craft, there is always room for improvement. One of the 1st things I learned when getting into music was ALWAYS stay teachable. The second was stay humble.
Q. If you could give your fans one random fact about you that you think they should or should not know about you what would that be?
DXRLING: I don’t know how many people know this but I’m a Suicide Girl. Random fact. 🙂
RANDY: I was in the Boy Scouts , and I love to go camping
Q.You’re a new addition to the crayon box what color would you be and why?
DXRLING: “SAD AND SPICY JEWBANO” it’s dark brown and sparkly, like me, the emo Cuban Jew. Lol.
RANDY: The most brutal color ever. Invisible! LOL
Q.Who are you inspired by?
DXRLING: My mom inspires me a lot. She adopted me when she was in her early 20’s and she’s literally superhuman. She never let me quit any endeavor I set forth in. Taught me about the importance of hard work and follow through. Before my last tour she made sure I was stocked up on supplements and green juice powder because she really cares about health. She’s the definition of a boss and I hope to be half the woman she is someday.
RANDY: Anthony Keids (singer from the Red Hot Chili Peppers). It’s a well known fact that he has a major dependency issues but manages to keep his demons at bay through working a 12 set program. I have similar issues as him and work the same program.
Q. What’s an average day like for you?
DXRLING: I get up around seven, get out of bed around nine, and I don’t worry bout’ nothin’ no because worryin’s a waste of my time. -Guns and Roses ( I get up, hike, go to the gym, sit in the sauna, eat something healthy, live stream for 5-7 hours, and then watch a movie or play video games or work on music.)
RANDY: Believe it or not my life if really boring when we are not touring, but to be honest i really prefer it this way. Usually get up around 11 am, 30-40 min hike, then the gym for an hour. Then start working on “DXRLING”, interviews, business, whatever we have in front of us that day. I usually squeeze in an AA meeting some time during the day. Then back to work on DXRLING (no one is ever going to care about your project more then you so we do everything that we can). Maybe once every few months we might go out to a club.
Q. Please discuss how you interact and respond to fans
DXRLING: I like to treat every human being like an equal. If you’re mean to me or rude, I’ll probably just ignore you.
RANDY: I always make an effort to go out of my way to meet as many people as possible by spending a lot of the time at the merch booth. and of course we always want people to buy something but really i’m more then happy with the fact that these people made the effort to come to our show 🙂
Q. Have you ever dealt with performance anxiety?
DXRLING: Of course! But the more I perform the easier it gets. And it helps a lot when the crowd is supportive and warm.
RANDY: Very early in my carer but it wore off really quick. Now i’m always super pumped to jump out there on stage and give the best show that I possibly can.
Q.Tell me about your favorite performance venues?
DXRLING: I loved House of Blues on Sunset Blvd. in LA and am honored I got to play there before it was torn down. I also LOVE Nikki’s in Sturgis, MI. The staff is like family, some of the most genuine people I’ve ever met, and they have a bowling alley and arcade in the back. Last time I played there, after the show, the staff gave us unlimited tokens. I felt like a kid and played video games for hours. It was truly magical.
RANDY: The Wiltern In LA,CA. The Oriental Theater In Denver CO. To be honest, there are so many! I really just love to play live.
Q.What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
DXRLING: I know it’s cliche but don’t give up on your dreams, keep pushing through even when it’s difficult, always stick it out for the silver lining and take it one day at a time. KEEP MAKING ART and show the world! And don’t spend your money on stupid shit… put your money back into your art.
RANDY: QUIT NOW WHILE YOUR AHEAD!!LOL But on the real side, don’t half ass it. If you really want to do it give it everything you got, and I mean everything! One of the main things I can tell you is, don’t wait for opportunities to come to you,YOU HAVE TO GO OUT AND MAKE YOUR OWN OPPORTUNITIES! What you put in is what you will get out!
