Everything is falling into place for L Devine to become the UK’s next pop icon. Tapped as a One to Watch by the likes of Noisey, YouTube and V Magazine, L Devine’s cocktail of next wave pop, an independent yet relatable attitude and a striking visual aesthetic stands out as a powerful proposition. Her newest single, “Naked Alone,” is an immediately attention-grabbing experience. The track sees L Devine’s full-throttled vocal explode into life fueled by heavy duty, funk-powered bass, furthering her patented brand of future pop invention.
She wrote the song during a frenzied 20-minute rush of inspiration with Swedish production duo INDIIA.
L Devine takes up the story: “They played me a bunch of beats they made. I was like, ‘Cool, you got anything else?’ And they replied, ‘We have this other one but we made it with a rapper in mind so not sure if it’ll work.’ I love a challenge, so was totally sold and determined to make this beat into a sick pop banger.”
As we’ve come to expect from L Devine, the song’s lyrics are playful on the surface but possess an insight into her generation’s experiences.
“I had recently moved from home to London. I was super homesick and didn’t really know anyone yet,” she continues. “I loved going to the studio and making music but my social life was definitely not thriving at the time. Coming home alone every night kind of got to me after a while. When I heard this super feel-good funk beat, I thought it would be a cool idea to just totally contradict that and turn feeling sorry for myself into this super tongue-in-cheek, almost funny, pop song.”
Having just played a sold-out debut headline show at Newcastle’s Think Tank and the Annie Mac Presents stage at The Great Escape, L Devine will now play her first London headline gig at The Courtyard Theatre on June 12th. She’s also confirmed for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend on May 25th.
Raised in Whitley Bay, L Devine (shortened from Olivia Devine as she shares her full name with a porn star) became immersed in music as a teenager, composing songs in her bedroom, uploading them online and performing in every venue she could.
She moved to London three years ago to pursue a career in songwriting, which quickly led to collaborations with a plethora of pop’s most exciting producers including John Hill (MIA, Rihanna), Rogét Chahayed (Miguel, Travis Scott), Burns(Britney, Ellie Goulding), Al Shux (Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar) and Ian Kirkpatrick (Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez).
Loaded with attitude, firmly rooted in reality but always with an edge, L Devine’s songs are inspired by her life and what she sees around her. Her melody-heavy strain of intelligent pop showcases an unabashed young woman with an innate ability to craft instantly relatable sonic snapshots.
