Nightwish, Finland’s and the world’s top symphonic metal band is back from taking 2017 off due to the founder Tuomas Holopainen (Keyboards) who stated that their last album The Endless Form Of Most Beautiful was his pinnacle writing for the band and no new music was in the tank for the band. Though he, his wife Johanna Kurkela and Troy Donockley worked new music and call the trio Auri which released their debut album on February 2018. Floor Jensen became a mother and was a good time for band members Kai Hahto Drums), Emppu Vuorinen (Guitars), Troy Donockley (Uilleann pipes, low whistles, bodhran, bouzouki & vocals) to relax and to personal matters.
The bands first Southern California show of the tour was at the seaside community of Ventura at the Majestic Ventura Theater on April 12, 2018, to a packed venue.
They are back performing 2 ½ hour non-stop energy of 21 songs with no opening bands. Songs from their new Decades album spanning the career of the band that has not been performed before and/or not performed in many years with songs they still perform. With a video screen showing various images of the wolves, a snake, snow-covered mountains and trees, human cultures, destruction, sea mammals, a snake and Latin and English writings of documents.
Opening the show with Intro (with Swanheart instrumental snippet) “End of All Hope”, and “Wish I Had An Angel”. The songs being performed for the first time or in many years such as: “Deep Silent Complete”, “Dead Boy’s Poem”, 10th Man Down” “Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean”, “The Kinslayer”, “Slaying The Dreamer” and “Come Cover Me”. On “The Carpenter” Troy san lead vocals on the first part of the song while sang on the second part with vocal range and “The Greatest Show on Earth”.
With ocean air, there was energized pep in Floor’s step while showing her dance moves for “I Want My Tears Back”.
The band also performed the fans favorite “Nemo”, “Elan”, “Elvenjig” (traditional cover) , “Elvenpath”, and ending the show with “The Greatest Show on Earth (Chapter I: Four Point Six; Chapter II: Life; Chapter III: The Toolmaker)”.
The band could have played more songs and the fans are happy they are back and happy for more music to come from the band for next year.
