Janet Jackson brought her State of the World Tour to the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena and the fans loved it. Two solid hours of Janet singing and dancing on a mostly clear stage backed by her musicians and dance troupe – no gimmicks, no pyrotechnics, no outlandish costumes – just pure Janet Jackson talent.
The show started with a video of issues facing everyone today in the world with commentary by Janet. She then entered the stage dressed in black and backed by white banners, strutting her stuff to State of the World and Burnitup. The fans were up on their feet as soon as she took the stage, dancing and singing along to every song. The first set was filled with fan favorites such as Nasty, What Have you Done For Me Lately, Escapade, All Nite and Love Will Never Do. Janet showed off her amazing dancing skills, matching her dancers, dressed all in white, step for step.
After a short break for costume changes, Janet sat on a stool to deliver Twenty Foreplay, and Where Are You Now showcasing her vocals. She was totally in touch with the audience throughout the show, covering the entire stage and pausing to wave, blow kisses and say hello to her fans. She continued to dance and sing, reaching her audience with songs such as Spending Time, Thats the Way Love Goes, and Throb.
After another short break, Janet took center stage to deliver What About, while two couples from her dancing troupe pantomimed the story of domestic abuse behind her. It was a powerful, disturbing, eye opening performance that had the audience in total silence until the end when Janet ended by saying “this was me” – the audience erupted into thunderous applause that continued for several minutes and brought Janet Jackson to tears on the stage. Followed by If and then a change in mood to end the set as Janet and her dance troupe busted some incredible moves to Rhythm Nation.
The fans yelled, whistled, clapped and stomped their feet till Janet returned to the stage to perform encores of Black Eagle, New Agenda, Dammn Baby, and Well Traveled.
Janet Jackson is a consummate performer. She knows her audience and delivers exactly what they want while still telling her story. Janet looked incredible; well toned, relaxed and incredibly energetic for a mother of a one year old. Well done Ms. Jackson, well done.
