The San Francisco Bay area Metal scene has a long and storied history of spawning some powerful and innovative acts: Metallica, Death Angel, Exodus, Testament and more recently Leviathan & High On Fire. With the release of the grinding single “HellFoot” on Feb. 12th, the Bay Area natives of Mudface are ready to carry on that tradition. Their 2nd National album release “The Bane Of Existence”, produced by Sahaj Ticotin (RA) & Bob Marlette (Atreyu, Coal Chamber, Rob Zombie, Seether) will be released on March 18th, 2016.
And we had a chance to get a few questions asked by a couple of the band members– (Band member(s) who answered the questions. CD = Chris Dinsmore, RK = Rob Kolowitz)
Q1. Ignite – The big release of your new album The Bane of Existence” is tomorrow, how has this new album differed from the last one?
A1. CD: We really pushed ourselves to think outside the box this time. With the help of some great producers (Bob Marlette, Sahaj Ticotin), we wanted this album to sound big and dynamic. And I think we accomplished that this time around. Lyrically I wanted to make the audience feel they could connect to what we were saying to them. As to say we are in this together.
Q2. Ignite– There has been a lot of changes to the line-up of the band, what are some of the things that the news guys have brought to the table that might be different from the previous members?
A2. CD: I think most importantly, they have to buy into the vision. Both Jim and Tim are seasoned vets of the SF Bay area music scene and both provide a very solid foundation for this band. Sometimes life gets in the way and band members come and go. It’s just part of life being in a band.
A2. RK: Tim brings passion, drive and dedication to excellence. Jim brings a signature tone and stage style. Grant brings a more modern writing style and I bring persistence, business acumen and creativity to both the stage show and songwriting.
Q3. Ignite– I see there is a father and son playing in the band. How is that going? You know how family members working together are sometimes said to not be a good thing. lol.
A3. RK: I have played in two other bands where there were family members and yes, it was a source of conflict in both of those bands. I don’t think we have much of a problem with it because we have quite an age gap between us which minimizes competitiveness. Plus I truly enjoy the blessing of having Grant in the band with me.
Q4. Ignite– The new single is called HELLFOOT, can you tell us a little bit about that song and how it came about?
A4. CD: As soon as Robert had sent me that song to write lyrics to it, I knew it was going to be a special song for us. I wrote the lyrics for that song in ten minutes. The song is about making the wrong choices in life and that sometimes you can’t come back from the damage those choices cause.
Q5. Ignite– What is the song on “The Bane Of Existence” that you love playing the most and why?
A5. CD: “Killshot” is a fun song that the fans really get into, “I’m On To You” have great energy live, “Down Below” has great angst to it during the verses and goes into this big chorus. Those are my faves!
A5. RK: “Do Unto Others” has such a frenzied pace of notes and effects pedals that I have to be 100% on to pull it off. I love playing that song because it is such a challenge to play well while running around like a maniac onstage.
Q6. Ignite– Do you guys have any touring plans this summer?
A6. CD: Yes we do. We are working on that as we speak. We will probably start on the western half of the US and work our way east. Hoping to get on a couple of festivals as well.
Q7. Ignite– Out of all the bands on the planet, What band would you most like to tour with, and why?
A7. CD: Lamb of God, Iron Maiden, Ministry, Fear Factory. The list goes on. These bands influence us in some way shape or form. We have a lot of respect for these bands as well as many others.
A7. RK: While I love all the bands Chris mentioned, I would most like to tour with Iron Maiden. They have the most amazing stage show around, they are great guys and they have the most loyal fans.
Q8. Ignite– What is your favorite song of all time? It can be one of yours or not. And tell us what it is about that song that make it your favorite of all time?
A8. CD: This one is too hard for me to answer because there are many. I will say this though; songs and lyrics of songs speak to you on so many levels. They can unite a nation, comfort you in death and rejoice in birth. A song can be there for you when no one else seems to be. It is your company on a long road trip. Music is that important!
A8. RK: Geez, I really can’t narrow it down to one. My top 3 are: “Heaven & Hell” by Black Sabbath, “Walk With Me In Hell” by Lamb of God, and “Infinite” by Forbidden Evil.
Q9. Ignite– When you die, what do you want to have written on your tombstone, and what do you want to be your legacy?
A9. CD: That I was passionate in what I loved to do and that I truly cared about the people around me in my life. Both family and friends!
A9. RK: My tombstone should say, “Die with your Boots On!” I would hope my legacy would be that I always gave 100% to the things I cared about and that I loved others, sometimes more than I should.
Q10. Ignite– Ok. This is where you can talk about anything, the fans etc. and anything you want to get out about the new album.
A10. CD: We do this because ultimately we love the connection we have with our fans on stage and I think we made an album that continues that bond with them. Like I mentioned earlier, I like to think we wrote songs that everybody can connect with on a human level. Good or bad, we are on this planet together and there will always be obstacles to climb.
A10. RK: I want to give a shout out to Sasha Horn (ex- Forbidden). He played the drums on this album. He is an amazing player and person and we have not given him enough credit for all his contributions.
Thanks for your time again, we really appreciate your time to answer these.
