Wilco has been described as an eclectic indie rock band, but to the fans at the St. Augustine Amphitheater Friday night, they were true to their alternative country roots, right down to cowboy hats and boots, receiving a standing ovation from a packed house as they took to the stage. They started the evening with the ever popular Via Chicago which was peppered with gunfire pops and set the tone for the next two and a half hours of non-stop music.
The band rarely paused between the 30 songs presented to the audience, yet somehow each song seamlessly blended to the next as Handshake Drugs and I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, with it’s amazing guitar riffs, followed. Each song the band presented appeared to be the crowd favorite until the next one was played, and the audience appreciation grew and grew. Hummingbird drew a whole house standing ovation, followed by whistles, foot stomping and thunderous applause for Panthers. In Your Dreams was totally true to Wilco’s beginnings with pure country twangy guitars.
Wilco brings more than just years to the stage, they bring such an incredibly deep catalog of songs that they are able to change up their sets for each and every venue, presenting a wide variety of the music to their faithful fans. The fans were so enthralled that at the end of the 24 song set, they brought Wilco back for not one but two encore sessions for six more songs.
