American Idol Live at St. Augustine Amphitheatre

American Idol Live Tour played the St. Augustine Amphitheatre to a smaller than usual, but enthusiastic family crowd.  The top finalists from season 13 opened the show with Counting Stars, showcasing each member.

Majesty Rose played the crowd like a seasoned pro during her solo of Tightrope.  Malaya Watson got the first standing ovation of the night with her  rendition of When I Was Your Man.  Sam Woolf was definitely a crowd favorite with Lego House and Sail Away, showing off his vocals.

Season 13 winner, Caleb Johnson, and runner-up, Jena Irene Asciutto, took the stage for  a rousing duet, Gimme Shelter, which had the fans all on their feet and demanding more.  The interplay between Caleb and Jena during their duet was electric, and the vocals were spot on.

Jena Irene Asciutto  played piano during I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You and the crowd rewarded her efforts with thunderous applause, but her best performance of the night was My Body featuring a drum battle with Alex Preston.

Jessica Meuse brought the country to the stage with her version of You and I and then surprised the crowd with a country rendition of Pumped Up Kicks, which somehow worked.

Alex Preston is a musical beast, playing lead guitar and drums and providing great harmonies as back-up vocalist during other performer’s songs.  But when he took the stage for his solos, the house rewarded him with standing ovations for both selections.  He showcased a song he wrote, Fairytale, which enthralled the audience and followed up with a fantastic acoustic version of Too Close.

Caleb Johnson closed the show with four solos.  Family Tree was lively but the audience came alive when Caleb launched into Maybe I’m Amazed, coming to their feet .  Caleb followed with a song from his new album, to be released August 12, Fighting Gravity.  The audience clearly enjoyed the new song.  Caleb finished his set with what I considered his best song of the night, Dazed and Confused, sounding like the rocker he is.
